Katie Holmes gave birth to her baby quietly in a room filled with medical staff using hand gestures. At some point Katie gave a non-verbal indication that she wanted relief from the pain she was in, and an epidural anesthetic was administered.

Tom Cruise was there as comfort and support. He is now calling her a 'champ' according to reports. I'm starting to think that the weirdness is just a smokescreen to conceal the lameness...CHAMP?

The new baby weighed 7 pounds, 7 ounces and has been given the name Suri. Cruise's publicist, Paul Bloch gave out the details in a statement late yesterday. There was no word about where the child was born.

Tom Cruise Jokes About Eating Katie's Placenta

My source represented this story as totally serious for the first couple paragraphs. In most primate species, the mother does eat the placenta. It is a less common practice in Humans. The disc-shaped mass is rich in estrogens, so Tom Cruise may plan to eat it in an effort to stave off his fast approaching 'old guy' look.

Tom said later in the same interview that he would most likely NOT eat Katie's placenta. He did not give any indication of whether he expected Katie to eat it. Placetophagy is said to combat post-partum depression. Tom Cruise publicly criticized Brooke Sheilds for using anti-depressants to help with this problem.

Katie Holmes to Deliver at Home in a Custom Made Delivery Room

I haven't read anything saying that the 'deliver at home' thing is a way of avoiding bad press. The people attending are scientologists, so we can't hope for any leaks unless one of them is a future ex-scientologist.

I think the mainstream press has quite a balancing act going on. They are presenting enough facts to intrigue us with Tom's with his 'eccentricity' and mania while avoiding confronting the litigious Cruise with anything too critical. I think an outsider's take on the the psychological state of these parents to be during what tends to be a pretty unguarded moment is something Tom's people want to avoid. A few hundred thousand dollars in hospital equipment is nothing.

Interviewer Dianne Sawyer pressed Tom Cruise about whether Katie Holmes is being pressured to have a drug free, silent birth. Tom had this to say; "

Whatever the woman wants. I'm not gonna tell Kate, you know. If she needs an epidural, she's gonna get her epidural."

An epidural is a local anesthetic.
